Heineken Sponsors Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2016.


For the second year in a row, Lagos Fashion & Design Week will be sponsored by top beer maker, Heineken. This year’s shows themed ‘Connecting the Dots’ are set to hold from October 26th to 29th, 2016. LFDW Fashion Focus Switches Gears


The format for this year’s LFDW Fashion Focus is taking a whole new shape. This year, rather than having designers apply for masterclasses and a chance to present at LFDW 2016 for a cash prize, the new format is that a select group of applicants will be mentored for a year by top industry professionals and attend seminars that will teach them essential skills in design, business, networking and the likes. Lisa Folawiyo Presents SS17 Collection at NYFW


Lisa Folawiyo has been in the limelight more for her incredible style than her eponymous brand in the past year, but the top Nigerian designer stepped back onto the scene with the release of her SS17 collection. It’s not been long since Olamide Ogundele moved to South Africa. The young model has however continued to prove her abilities and is moving quite quickly up the fashion scene in SA. L’Oreal Facing Lawsuit for Bad Relaxer


L’Oreal is facing a class-action lawsuit filed by two black women who accuse the brand’s SoftSheen Carson Optimum Amla Legend Relaxer Kit of causing them to experience hair loss and burning scalp. The amount being sued for is not clear yet but it is rumoured to be over $100M. Since news of the suit went public, black women have taken to the internet to share their negative experiences with the L’Oréal Softsheen Amla relaxer. Kate Moss Announces Plans to Start the Kate Moss Agency


Kate Moss is featured on the cover of Business of Fashion’s special BOF500 issue. In the issue, the “world’s most famous supermodel” as she’s dubbed by the magazine discusses her plans to start an agency of her own. Her agency would sign new models as well as actors and singers as she explains that she’s more interested in managing careers than just running a modelling agency. For more, click here.


Marc Jacobs Accused of Cultural Appropriation After SS17 Show


For his SS17 show, American fashion designer Marc Jacobs chose dreadlocks for all the models in the show, which to his credit, had a diverse range of races. However, Guido Palau–hairstylist for the show–referenced rave culture as his inspiration for the look. This proved to be offensive for many people as dreadlocks are typically registered to black people from Jamaica and not one black person was listed as inspirational to the look. Jacobs took to Instagram to defend himself from the allegations citing the fact that women of colour straighten their hair. This defence did not go down well as it instigated further attacks and commentary on forced Eurocentric beauty ideals. He has since apologised. For more, click here.

Genevieve Nnaji spent the better part of last week at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2016 where she sat on a panel with ace director Kunle Afoloyan to discuss the growth of Nollywood. For the second October in a row, Lupita Nyong’o is featured on the cover of American Vogue. For the shoot, the Oscar-winning beauty traveled home to Kenya alongside Mario Testino who shot her dancing with her people, showing off her family farm in Kisumu, and reconnecting with her grandma.
